 Machame Route

The Machame Route is one of the popular trekking routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It is known for its scenic beauty and varied landscapes. Here's a typical itinerary for the Machame Route, a seven-day climb, which allows for better acclimatization:

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Transfer to your hotel in Moshi for an orientation and briefing by your trekking company.
Rest and prepare for the climb.
Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Drive to the Machame Gate (1,490 meters / 4,888 feet).
Begin the trek through the rainforest, reaching the Machame Camp (2,980 meters / 9,777 feet).
Trekking time: approximately 6-7 hours.
Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Ascend through the heath and moorland zones.
Pass through the Shira Plateau to reach the Shira Camp (3,840 meters / 12,598 feet).
Trekking time: approximately 4-6 hours.
Day 4: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

Trek across the Shira Plateau, gaining altitude gradually.
Descend to the Barranco Valley and camp at Barranco Camp (3,950 meters / 12,959 feet).

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Traverse the Barranco Wall, a challenging climb with stunning views.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Ascend to Barafu Camp (4,640 meters / 15,223 feet), the base camp for the summit attempt.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Summit attempt begins in the early hours, reaching Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters / 19,341 feet) at sunrise.
Descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest and then continue to Mweka Camp (3,100 meters / 10,171 feet).
Trekking time: approximately 11-15 hours.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640 meters / 5,380 feet).
Receive your summit certificates and transfer back to Moshi.
Trekking time: approximately 3-4 hours.
